Hergie Bacyadan ousted by top seed Li Qian of China in Paris Olympics

Hergie Bacyadan bravely took the challenge, but ultimately succumbed to top-seeded Li Qian of China in the Round of 16 of the women's 75kg event at the 2024 Paris Olympics on Wednesday at the North Paris Arena.

The 29-year-old boxer Olympic first-timer absorbed a unanimous decision loss against the two-time Olympic medalist Qian, who brought home the silver medal in Tokyo three years ago and bronze in Rio de Janeiro in 2016.

Qian was quick to prove why she was the number one seed in the heaviest weight division in the women's division, unleashing combinations that took the Philippine bet's game out and securing the nod of all five judges after the first round.

Bacyadan continued to find Qian difficult to solve in the second round with the Chinese ace relying on her strong head shots to again rule the frame.

Bacyadan, though, didn't stop on fighting and connected better in the third and final round. However, it wasn't enough to salvage the campaign as Qian cruised to a one-sided win.

Qian will next take on either Sunniva Hofstad of Norway or eighth-seeded Lovlina Borgohain of India in the quarterfinals.
