'Careless' Reymart Gaballo wanted to finish fight early, says coach
Former world title challenger Reymart Gaballo got careless and paid the price in his bout against Kenbun Torres, according to his trainer Nonito Donaire Sr.
Gaballo, the no.1 rated WBO bantamweight, suffered a stunning first-round technical knockout loss last Friday against an unheralded Torres.
According to Donaire Sr, Gaballo's desire to go for an early finish caused him the fight.
"I did not think he would lose. We had good training but he got careless," Donaire Sr. said in Filipino in an interview.
"He wanted to finish early, though I said that when he releases a punch he needs to get back on his defense because he (Torres) will counter with a hook. It was not his night."
It was a tune-up-turned-disasater for Gaballo, as he is now expected to lose his no.1 spot in the ranking for a prospective fight with WBO bantamweight champ Yoshiki Takei.
