Eumir Marcial claims silver medal in Asian Games

Filipino Olympic bronze medalist and boxer Eumir Marcial settled for a silver medal in the 19th Asian Games in Hangzhou, China on Thursday.

Marcial fell to China's Tanglatihan Tuohetaerbieke via unanimous decision in the finals of the men's 80kg division to claim the silver medal.

Prior to this, Marcial knocked out Syria's Ahmad Ghousoon in the semifinals. In the quarterfinals, Marcial defeated Weerapon Jongjoho of Thailand.

In the preliminary round, Marcial beat Mongolia's Dalai Ganzorig in the Round of 32 and Vietnam's Manh Cuong Nguyen in the Round of 16.

Marcial previously bagged the bronze medal in the 2018 Asian Games. In the World Championships, the Filipino boxer won a silver in the 2019 edition, and won gold in the 2015, 2017, 2019, and 2022 editions of the Southeast Asian Games.

He is already assured of another trip to the Olympics as he finished in the top two of his division in the Asian Games. 

He is the fourth Filipino athlete assured of a slot in the Paris Olympics following pole vault's EJ Obiena and gymnastics' Carlos Yulo and Aleah Finnegan.

As of writing, the Philippines has a total of 14 medals in the Asiad with two golds, two silvers, and ten bronze medals.
