Eumir Marcial would be happy if Pacquiao pushes through with Olympic stint

Filipino Olympic bronze medalist and boxer Eumir Marcial would be happy if Manny Pacquiao will be allowed to compete in the Olympics.

Pacquiao's camp had previously reached out to the Philippine Olympic Committee to check if the eight-division champion could compete in the Olympics.

"Siyempre para sa akin, para sa sarili ko, masaya ako nung nasabi na [gusto] ni Sir Manny 'yung Olympics kasi isang karangalan din 'yun para sa aming amateur boxers para alam nila na ang Olympics ay 'di basta-basta," Marcial told members of the media during the Asian Games send-off on Monday.

("Of course, for me, I was happy when Sir Manny said he wanted to compete in the Olympics because it's an honor for us amateur boxers, for that to show that the Olympics is not just any competition.")

Marcial is aware of the challenges Pacquiao might encounter should he pursue his Olympic dreams, such as age limit and missing some qualification window like the Asian Games.

"'Di ko alam paano nila aanuhin 'yun pero para sa akin, masaya ako kung lalaban si Sir Manny."

("I don't know how they can make it happen but for me, I'd be happy if Sir Manny can fight.")

Right now, Marcial is turning his focus to the Asian Games which may give him a shot in the 2024 Paris Olympics.

However, from middleweight, he will move up to the light heavyweight division.

"Medyo naninibago lang sa weight class pero sa tulong ng coaches sa training camp namin, napapamilyar ko na 'yung weight division," Marcial said.

("I'm having to adjust to the weight class but with the help of the coaches in our training camp, I'm becoming more familiar with the weight division.")

Marcial won the bronze medal in the 2018 Asian Games in Indonesia.
