MP Promotions targets world title fights for Jade Bornea and Marlon Tapales in March 2023
Filipino boxing fans will have something to look forward to in the coming year as MP Promotions President Sean Gibbons is looking to give Jade Bornea and Marlon Tapales much-awaited world title fights.
Bornea and Tapales are both the number one contenders to the IBF world super flyweight and super bantamweight titles respectively. According to Gibbons, he is looking to have both fighters compete in the first quarter of 2023.
“The IBF should, the next week or so, order the fight [Bornea vs. Martinez] because the fight is overdue. I would hope to see that fight happen by March of 2023 and same with Marlon Tapales,” Gibbons said.
“The champion Murodjon Akhmadaliev is injured, wink wink. I see the guy running around the world. His injury, the time the IBF gave him for medical extension is getting ready to expire. That's another fight you should see some time in March 2023.”
Bornea, 18-0 with 12 knockouts as a pro boxer, last saw action in an activity fight last August against Ivan Meneses where he won via technical knockout. Tapales, meanwhile, last fought in May where he won by knockout.
Furthermore, Gibbons stated that both fighters will wait for their respective world title shots and not take any other fights until then.
“The beauty is, you play the lottery and you got the winning ticket. They are both happy to just focus on the holidays and go right to the world title. They do not want to take any chance of anything happening, getting hurt, or whatever. They are going right into the fights,” Gibbons said.
