Jerwin Ancajas lacked highlight punch to back Martinez — analyst
Veteran boxing analyst Atty. Ed Tolentino noted that former IBF world super flyweight champion Jerwin Ancajas lacked the punch that could have backed Fernando Martinez in their rematch this past weekend.
Ancajas, 30, suffered a unanimous decision loss to the Argentinian. It was the first back-to-back set of defeats of his career and the second time he fell short against Martinez following their first encounter in February.
“Look at Martinez, he even put his hands in front of Ancajas. There were even instances when his defense was down and he was taunting Ancajas to trade with him,” Tolentino told Sparring Sessions LIVE.
“Jerwin can punch, but he is unlike Nonito Donaire or Manny Pacquiao that has a highlight punch.”
To his credit, Ancajas scored 22 knockouts in his 33 victories as a professional boxer. Against Martinez, however, Ancajas seemingly lacked the firepower to make his foe think twice. According to Tolentino, Ancajas’ stoppages were systematic and were not because of his power.
“His knockouts, he wears them down. He is a systematic fighter. And since there are conditioning issues, it also added to his lack of power and he cannot plant his feet because Martinez kept coming in,” Tolentino explained.
