Jerwin Ancajas showed the same problems in Martinez rematch – analyst
Veteran boxing analyst Atty. Ed Tolentino is convinced that Jerwin Ancajas showed just the same problems from his previous fight in his rematch with IBF world super flyweight champion Fernando Martinez this past weekend in Carson, California.
Ancajas, 33-3-2 with 22 knockouts as a prizefighter, lost his world title to Martinez last February. He tapped his rematch clause with the Argentinian but fell short again in the rematch via unanimous decision.
“Though Martinez won by unanimous decision, in my opinion, Jerwin performed better than the last fight. But the same problems were there. As I said there were conditioning issues. Jerwin Ancajas withered in the second half of the fight,” Tolentino told Sparring Sessions LIVE.
“But don't get me wrong, he did well in the early going. In fact, the jab caught Martinez coming in. He had a good strategy. He held his ground in the first five rounds. By the sixth, Martinez had hurt Jerwin then the latter started to fade.”
Besides Ancajas’ struggles with his conditioning, mainly brought upon the difficulty of cutting weight to 115 pounds, Tolentino also pointed out that Martinez was tough as a bull and had a gas tank that could last for the whole twelve rounds.
“Martinez was like bulletproof to Ancajas's punches,” Tolentino quipped.
“Ancajas was landing but either Martinez was tough or with Ancajas’ conditioning issues he lacked the pop in his punches. Martinez knew Ancajas had problems with his conditioning then added constant pressure. The guy kept coming forward.”
