Ancajas' conditioning caused his downfall in first Martinez fight, says Bornea
Filipino contender Jade Bornea is convinced that Jerwin Ancajas’ conditioning betrayed him in his first fight against IBF world super flyweight champion Fernando Martinez last February.
Ancajas, 33-2-2 with 22 knockouts as a pro, was battered en route to losing his world title to Martinez via unanimous decision last February. He is scheduled to face the Argentinian in a rematch on October 9 (PH time) at Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California.
“I think conditioning was the difference. We trained and sparred together at the Wild Card Gym he was giving it his all. He was ready, but his conditioning on [fight] day was not one hundred percent,” Bornea told Sparring Sessions LIVE.
Bornea, currently ranked as the No. 1 contender to the IBF 115-pound world title, knows all too well just how good Ancajas is when in tip-top shape. According to the Filipino pug, Ancajas could move up two weight classes and be as effective if not better.
“He is really big and is good at making weight but his body does not recover after the weigh-in which is why that happened to him. He could move up to 118 or 122 pounds because he is very skilled and has the height,” Bornea said.
