Hard-hitting heavyweight boxer Earnie Shavers passes away — reports

Former heavyweight contender and one of the hardest-hitting fighters in boxing history Earnie Shavers has passed away at 78 years old, according to multiple reports.

No cause of death was reported.

Shavers, famous for fighting heavyweight legends such as Muhammad Ali, Larry Holmes, and Ken Norton, compiled a record of 74-14-1 with 68 knockouts. He last fought in 1995 at 51 years old against a journeyman where he lost via knockout in round two.

Though a celebrated fighter, Shavers never got to win a world title throughout his career. He challenged Ali for the WBC and WBA world heavyweight titles in 1977 and Holmes for the WBC world title in 1979 but lost on both occasions.
