Carl Jammes Martin retains WBA title with lopsided win over Tanzanian foe
Filipino prospect Carl Jammes Martin made a successful defense of his WBA Asia super bantamweight title following a lopsided unanimous decision win over Charles Tondo last Saturday at SM San Lazaro in Manila.
Both fighters went to throw hard shots after feeling each other out in the opening minute of round one. Tondo went to the head and body while Martin laid traps hoping to catch his foe with a big left hand.
Martin, 23, eventually found a home for his patented straight left in round two though none of the punches seemed to bother Tondo. Both fighters unleashed a series of stiff combinations in round three with Martin getting the better of the exchange.
A hard right hook momentarily stunned Martin coming in round 4. The Filipino fought back and fought hard the next round, unleashing a series of combinations that made Tondo ride his bike.
Martin had Tondo hurt in round 6 from a barrage of punches to the head and body. Tondo survived the round and looked fully recovered by round 7.
Martin upped the tempo in round 9 throwing combinations with bad intentions. However, Tondo was able to weather the storm and even sneak counterpunches here and there.
Martin repeatedly landed his left straight in round 10 and then followed up with hard body shots the following round. The Filipino pressed the action in the 12th and final round as Tondo unleashed some of his own until the final bell.
All three judges saw the fight for Martin, awarding him a unanimous decision nod after 36 minutes of action. The scorecards were 118-110, 119-109 and 119-109.
Martin improved his perfect record to 20-0 with 16 knockouts while Tondo dropped to 12-6-2 with 5 knockouts.
