Mark Magsayo remains an 'attractive fighter' despite setback, says analyst
Veteran boxing analyst Atty. Ed Tolentino believes that former WBC world featherweight champion Mark Magsayo would remain an attraction even after he failed to defend his crown against lanky Mexican Rey Vargas.
The 27-year-old Magsayo lost via split decision to Vargas this past weekend at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas. Despite the setback, Tolentino believes that the loss was far from a career-tarnishing defeat.
“He remains an attractive fighter. He is aggressive, punches hard, and is a former world champion. His loss to Vargas, I don't think it dented Magsayo's reputation,” Tolentino told Sparring Sessions LIVE.
“A lot of people noticed he is exciting and even while trailing on points he has the tendency to catch up and score a knockout. He cannot go back to fighting patsies because he is now in the spotlight.”
The respected analyst further added that should Magsayo remain focused on his career, it would only be a matter of time before he gets to compete for a world title again.
“Featherweight is a deep division, there would not be a lack of quality opponents. If he stays the course it would not take him that long before he gets another world title shot. The loss was not damaging but of course, he still has to improve,” Tolentino said.
“It is not the end of the world for Magsayo if at all, he is getting noticed on the international stage. The more he should pursue to improve his craft.”
