Magsayo apologizes for losing, Vargas says he was not hurt by knockdown

Former WBC world featherweight champion Mark Magsayo apologized to his fans after failing to defend his world title against Rey Vargas this Sunday at the Alamodome in San Antonio, Texas.

Magsayo, 27, scored a knockdown against the Mexican in round 9 but it was not enough to salvage him a victory losing the title via split decision after twelve rounds.

“Apologies to all and thank you for all the support. We will come back and I will work hard for it. Thank you,” Magsayo wrote in a Facebook post shortly after the fight.

Vargas, now a two-division world champion with a perfect record of 36-0 with 22 knockouts, says he was not hurt from the knockdown and that allowed him to cruise to the final bell.

“It wasn't a power punch, it was not a super hard punch,” Vargas said during the post-fight press conference.

“It was something of a bad movement. He did get me, but we were able to move on and come out strong.”
