Jesse Rodriguez batters Rungvisai to retain super flyweight world title

Jesse Rodriguez made a successful first defense of his WBC world super flyweight title following a technical knockout over ex-champion Srisaket Sor Rungvisai this Saturday (Sunday in Manila) at Tech Port Arena in San Antonio, USA.
Rodriguez, 22, dictated the tempo the whole evening using his jab, combinations and angles that the Thai never figured out. Rungvisai, to his credit, never stopped coming the entire bout throwing bombs and looking for a knockout.

Rodriguez, however, was always a step ahead of Rungvisai and even managed to drop the sturdy former champion with a clobbing left hand in round 7. From there, the fight went further downhill for Rungvisai as Rodriguez went for a finish with a series of combinations the following round.
Hurt and unable to defend himself, the referee stepped in to stop the contest in round 8. The win improved Rodriguez’s unblemished record to 16-0 with 11 knockouts while Rungvisai dropped to 50-6-1 with 43 knockouts.
