Amir Khan says he was asked to postpone retirement for mega fight with Mayweather
Former world champion Amir Khan is claiming that he was asked by former five-division world champion Floyd Mayweather Jr. to delay his retirement so that they could make a mega fight between each other.
Khan, who retired with a 34-6 with 21 knockouts as a professional boxer, used to serve as Manny Pacquiao’s sparring partner at the famed Wild Card Gym.
He last fought in February against Kell Brook where he lost by way of sixth-round technical knockout then announced his retirement after the bout.
“Floyd said to me, ‘Look, we should get it on.’ And I said ‘Brother, tomorrow I’m going to announce my retirement.’ And he goes, ‘No, I don’t think you should,’” Khan told The Sun.
“Obviously, pro fighters say to you all your life we should fight each other and they keep you on the side, on the bench, and I’m like forget that man, I want to be in control of myself.”
Throughout the years, Khan had repeatedly called out for a big money fight between him and Manny Pacquiao or Mayweather. His efforts ended up in vain, and he also lost some of his biggest fights by way of knockout, earning a reputation of having a glass chin.
Coming off another beatdown in his last bout and with 5 of his 6 defeats coming by way of stoppage, Khan just knew that it is time to call it day.
“When I call it a day, I call it a day. I do not call it a day because someone else is taking control like Floyd Mayweather or Manny Pacquiao says now we’ll fight you. Waiting around and waiting around for them so I thought nah man, I’ll do what’s best for me,” Khan stated.
