Pinoy Olympian Mark Barriga gets another crack at boxing world title

Filipino boxing Olympian Mark Anthony Barriga will get another crack at championship glory when he takes on WBO world light flyweight champion Jonathan Gonzalez on June 24 at the Osceola Heritage Park in Kissimmee, USA.

Barriga, who represented the Philippines in the 2012 Olympics, is 11-1 with 2 knockouts as a professional boxer. He used to train under the tutelage of Jerwin Ancajas’ coach Joven Jimenez but took a hiatus when he lost his first world title attempt against Carlos Licona in December 2018.

Barriga, 28, mounted a comeback since that fateful night winning two fights in a row against Filipino journeymen last year. Gonzalez, meanwhile, is 25-3-1 with 14 KOs as a pro and is coming off a three-fight winning streak. The upcoming bout marks the first defense of his world title.
