Nonito Donaire nominated for fighter of the year, wife Rachel for manager of the year
Four-division champion Nonito Donaire Jr. has been nominated in the Boxing Writers Association of America's 2021 for Fighter of the Year award.
His wife, manager, and trainer Rachel meanwhile was nominated for 2021 Manager of the Year.
Donaire showcased in 2021 that he still possesses devastating power even at 39 years old when he defeated Nordine Oubaali last May via fourth-round knockout to claim the WBC world bantamweight title.
Seven months later, Donaire defended the world title against fellow Reymart Gaballo where he also won by way of fourth-round knockout. Saul “Canelo” Alvarez, Tyson Fury, Josh Taylor, Oleksandr Usyk, and Stephen Fulton were also nominated for the award.
“In a nomination meeting on Sunday, the BWAA determined the top candidates from 2021 for Fighter of the Year, Fight of the Year, Trainer of the Year, Manager of the Year, Most Courageous, Long and Meritorious,” the BWAA wrote in the announcement.
Donaire, The RING 2012 Fighter of the Year and 2021 PBC Fighter of the Year, is currently in negotiations for a much-anticipated rematch with the WBA and IBF world bantamweight champion Naoya Inoue of Japan. — LA, GMA News
