Fernando Daniel Martinez stuns Jerwin Ancajas, wins title fight by decision


Argentinian Olympian Fernando Daniel Martinez threw more than a thousand punches en route to pulling off a major upset via unanimous decision over Jerwin Ancajas to claim the IBF world super flyweight title this Sunday at the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, USA.

Martinez came out swinging in the opening round throwing hard left straights and right hooks. Ancajas was composed, seemingly trying to find his rhythm while throwing jabs to keep his foe at bay.

Martinez upped the tempo in round two throwing hard uppercuts going to the head and body. Ancajas went to the mid-section and stayed in the pocket, allowing the Argentinian to close the distance and throw heavy shots.

Both fighters exchanged heavy leather in the opening seconds of round three. Martinez started to throw his trademark overhand right while Ancajas frequently unleashed his left that stunned Martinez.

An accidental clash of heads opened a cut on the side of Martinez's left eye in round three. The challenger slow down for a brief moment, seemingly starting to feel the effects of the body punches that Ancajas threw at him.

Martinez came out swinging again round 5, landing hard left hooks on top. Ancajas, meanwhile, chose to stay on the inside though he looked more effective when he gives himself distance to throw combinations.

Martinez threw everything in his arsenal in round six that momentarily overwhelmed Ancajas then proceeded to continue his offensive assault in the next couple of rounds but was wobbled by in round 8.

Ancajas started to let go of his jab again in round 9 before getting lured to brawl in the center of the ring. Martinez threw more and landed more, prompting Ancajas' corner to instruct the fighter to take a round off in 10.

A right hook stunned from Ancajas stunned Martinez in the opening of round 10. Later in the round, Martinez landed shots of his own that briefly stopped Ancajas in his tracks.

Martinez lured Ancajas to a brawl in rounds 11 and 12 landing multiple power shots at a visually gassed Ancajas, who lost pop in his punches in the championship rounds.

All three judges saw the fight for Martinez, improving his record to 14-0 with 8 knockouts while Ancajas’ suffered his second professional defeat as he fell to 33-2-2 with 22 knockouts.
