Analyst on the historical significance of Jerwin Ancajas' next fight: 'He is about to match Elorde's record'

Reigning IBF world super flyweight champion Jerwin Ancajas is on the verge of making history in his upcoming fight against Fernando Daniel Martinez on Sunday, February 27 at the Cosmopolitan of Las Vegas, USA.

Ancajas, 33-1-2 with 22 knockouts as a professional boxer, will figure in his tenth world title defense against the unbeaten Olympian from Argentina. Should he emerge victorious this weekend, he is set to match the record of the late Filipino Hall of Famer Gabriel “Flash” Elorde.

“Ancajas has good hands. He has a very fluid left straight, I like the body work, I like the jab, and I like the discipline of this boy. If he posts the tenth title defense he will always be matching the record of Elorde who had the most title defenses in one title reign,” said Tolentino.

“He is not finished. He is looking forward to another weight class and possible unification with the WBO bantamweight champion Kazuto Ioka. Right now, in my opinion, we are talking here of the best champion that we have right now.”

The 30-year-old Ancajas has held the IBF world title since September 2019 when he beat the then undefeated McJoe Arroyo via unanimous decision. Already one of the best in his division, Tolentino cited that the only thing missing in Ancajas’ career now is a mega fight.

“The longevity and consistency are there, the only thing lacking right now is a big named money opponent. Hopefully, that will happen after this fight when he takes on Ioka.” — LA, GMA News
