MP Promotions president trying to patch things up with John Riel Casimero
MP Promotions President Sean Gibbons is reportedly trying to patch things up with WBO world bantamweight champion John Riel Casimero before the Filipino’s next fight against Paul Butler on April 23 at a yet to be determined venue in Liverpool, England.
“Gibbons and Casimero have been exchanging texts. It looks like Casimero is going to the US and will be training there. Gibbons says he will be involved in this upcoming defense,” said veteran sports broadcaster and analyst Quinito Henson.
“From my understanding, he will be training again with Memo Heredia, the guy who got him ready for Duke Micah. He did not have a good experience in San Diego when he prepared for Butler in Dubai.”
Gibbons and Casimero had a falling out after the latter’s fight against Guillermo Rigondeaux last August. The incident saw Casimero drifting apart from his A-team including his strength and conditioning coach Memo Heredia.
According to Henson, it would be in Casimero’s best interest to make amends with his team especially since they are the ones responsible for taking his career to new heights. If he does that, Henson is convinced that the future is bright for the Pinoy pugilist.
“Why change something that is not broken? He did well when he trained under Heredia, why not bring it back? Casimero needs to defend that championship to line him up for Naoya Inoue. That is going to be over a million-dollar fight,” Henson stressed.
“He should not worry, the future is there for him but he has to stay disciplined and focused. I really feel he should listen to the advice of Gibbons because he has a track record of good connections and good opportunities for Filipino fighters.”
