Sky is the limit for Mark Magsayo should he get past Gary Russell, says analyst
A win over WBC world featherweight champion Gary Russell Jr. will take Mark Magsayo’s boxing career to new heights, according to veteran boxing analyst Atty. Ed Tolentino.
The unbeaten Magsayo is slated to duke it out against Russell this Sunday, January 23 at the Borgata Hotel Casino in Atlantic City, USA.
“Sky is the limit should he win the championship,” said Tolentino.
"He will get to choose [his opponents] because he will be chased by contenders and other champions. That is the WBC belt, a prestigious title so his fellow champions will go after him.”
Magsayo, who holds a record of 23-0 with 16 knockouts, is seen by oddsmakers and experts alike as the underdog against Russell.
Losing the fight against Russell is not far-fetched according to Tolentino, but it will only be detrimental if Magsayo comes up with an embarrassing performance.
“If he loses but went the distance then that is okay. He might get to fight for the title of other champions which are better matches for him compared to Russell,” Tolentino noted.
“But if he gets knocked out or suffers a humiliating defeat, it will be back to square one. If he loses, I hope it would not be a humiliating defeat so he can somehow get to keep his momentum.”
