Donaire remains devastating at 39 years old, says analyst
Four-division champion Nonito Donaire Jr. is now at the most devastating weight class in his career, said veteran boxing analyst Ed Tolentino.
Donaire, 39, defended his WBC world bantamweight title via fourth-round knockout against his fellow Filipino Reymart Gaballo this past weekend at the Dignity Health Sports Park in Carson, California.
"The thing with Donaire, he is fighting at the weight class where he is really the most devastating because he has the physical advantage in this division. He changed his diet and third, Donaire does not adore his power as much as he used to," Tolentino said.
"There was a time in his career that he so much believed that he can knock everybody out with one punch. That led to his decline, he forgot the fundamentals that got him to the pedestal. Now he brought it back, changed his diet, and went back to the basics."
Shortly after his last outing, Donaire said that he wants to become undisputed at the 118-pound division. The IBF and WBA bantamweight world titles are currently held by Naoya Inoue while the WBO title is in the hands of another Filipino, John Riel Casimero.
"39 is 39, the windows of opportunity are still closing in for Donaire so he is in a hurry. But boy, what an end this would be unlike any other Filipino champion if he can pull it off," Tolentino said.
