Dana White shuts down idea of Usman vs. Canelo
UFC President Dana White is not in favor of seeing UFC welterweight world champion Kamaru Usman against boxing's unified super middleweight champion Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez.
Touted as the No.1 pound-for-pound mixed martial artist in the world, Usman previously expressed his desire to go to boxing to challenge the WBO, WBC, IBF, and WBC titleholder Alvarez.
They both fought and won on the same day, with Alvarez scoring an eleventh-round knockout over Caleb Plant in Las Vegas while Usman scored a unanimous decision nod over Colby Covington in New York.
As good as Usman is, the UFC big boss does not seem to fancy his fighter’s chances against the top 1 pound-for-pound boxer in the world.
“I watched the Canelo fight tonight. He does not want to fight Canelo,” said White during the UFC 268 post-fight press conference.
“Come on, man, let us stop this sh*t. If Canelo wants to come over here, let us do it. You do not want to box Canelo.”
MMA fighters crossing over to boxing has been a trend as of late. And while that is the case, White believes that Usman should stick to his craft and cement his legacy in his sport.
“If Usman does not exist, Colby Covington is the champion here,” White quipped.
“Usman is just the best ever. He is the best welterweight of all time and is on his way to GOAT status.”
