Donaires believe Jerwin Ancajas could be PH boxing's next flag bearer

Four-division champion and current WBC world bantamweight titleholder Nonito Donaire Jr. and his wife and manager Rachel believe IBF world super flyweight world champion Jerwin Ancajas could be the next flag bearer of Philippine boxing.

“I am leaning towards Jerwin Ancajas. I think he is really strong and he is taking his career seriously,” said Rachel, who is also her husband’s head trainer.

“Even though his career appears to be coming on slowly, that is the best way to do it. It took Nonito a lot of time to get that fight with Vic Darchinyan. Ancajas has been proven to be a very formidable champion in the lower weights. For me, he is at the top of my list.”

“[Ancajas] is not only a southpaw, but he also has the style and talent. He is not about just throwing punches with power. He is thinking in there with lateral movements,” Nonito added.

Ancajas, 29, holds a record of 33-1-2 with 22 knockouts and has so far made nine successful defenses of his world title.

He is currently in the USA with his coach and manager, Joven Jimenez, while they await the schedule of their tenth title defense.

Donaire, meanwhile, is reportedly slated to defend his title against fellow Filipino and WBC interim bantamweight champion Reymart Gaballo on December 11 in a yet-to-be-determined venue.
