Onyok Velasco rewarded with his own roasted chicken store for past Olympic achievement

After 1996 Atlanta Olympics silver medalist Mansueto 'Onyok' Velasco said he did not receive some of the pledges he was promised after his achievement back then, food brand Chooks-to-Go gave a surprise reward to the boxer.

Chooks-to-Go, in a statement on Saturday, said it rewarded Velasco his own store of the roasted chicken brand and an additional P100,000 reward.

"We’re giving one Chooks-to-Go store to Onyok because as a Filipino we owe it to him for bringing honor to our country. We are also giving him an additional P100,000 so that he can have his long-delayed honeymoon in Boracay with his wife May," Chooks-to-Go president Ronald Mascariñas said in a statement.

Velasco himself said he was surprised with Chooks-to-Go's gift.

"Sir Ronald asked me to come here and bring my medal. I did not know why. Apparently, this was their surprise for me," Velasco said in a mix of English and Filipino. "I thought I also won in the Tokyo Olympics since I got a store from them."

Velasco said the store will be a big help, not just for him, but also to his family.

"Not only will I benefit from this, but also my family and my kids, they will be secured because of this."

Velasco previously revealed that not all pledges promised to him, including a P2.5 million reward from Congress, were fulfilled.

Malacañang said there was government negligence in the failure to deliver Velasco's rewards.

Sen. Bong Go, a former aide of President Rodrigo Duterte, said the Office of the President will give P500,000 to Velasco.
