Malacañang on Sunday congratulated Filipino boxer Eumir Marcial after he won the quarterfinals fight against Arman Darchinyan of Armenia for the men's middleweight division at the Tokyo Olympics 2020.
With the knockout win, Marcial is assured of at least a bronze medal.
"We congratulate Eumir Marcial for securing the Philippines' third Olympic medal when he defeated his opponent in the men's boxing middleweight quarterfinals today, August 1, 2021, at the Tokyo Olympics," presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said in a statement sent to reporters.
"Let us continue supporting and cheering Eumir and other Filipino athletes in their quest for gold. Mabuhay ka, Eumir. Go for gold!" he added.
Marcial will next fight Oleksandr Khyzhniak of Ukraine in the semis slated for August 5, Thursday.
Marcial's victory gave the Philippines its third medal from this year's Summer Games after weightlifter Hidilyn Diaz delivered the country's first-ever gold medal while another boxer in Nesthy Petecio is assured of at least a silver. —KG, GMA News
