Ryan Garcia overcomes knockdown to win WBC title by knockout
Rising star Ryan Garcia overcame his toughest test to date following a seventh-round knockout over Luke Campbell to claim the WBC interim lightweight title this Sunday morning at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas.
The 22-year-old Garcia was game the entire night as he moved forward with bad intentions throwing hard shots to the head and body. In round two, Campbell landed an overhand left that floored Garcia for the first time in his career.
To Garcia’s credit, he remained composed, got back on his feet, and weathered the storm. He went back to moving forward soon after and managed to hurt Campbell with a left hook in round 5. In round 7, Garcia closed the show with a left hook to the body that reduced his foe to a knee.
The stoppage came at the 1:58 of round seven, improving Garcia’s unblemished record to 21-0 with 18 knockouts while Campbell fell to 20-4 with 16 knockouts.
