Mark Magsayo survives first fight under MP Promotions with split decision nod over Rigoberto Hermosillo
It was not the kind of performance everybody hoped to see, but Mark Magsayo got the job done following a split decision nod over Rigoberto Hermosillo this Sunday at the Microsoft Theater in Los Angeles, USA.
The 25-year-old from Tagbilaran City was impressive in the early going of the fight as he looked fast on his feet and in setting up his combinations. Hermosillo however proved to be a live opponent as he kept moving forward throwing and landing more throughout the contest.
Magsayo started to lose steam and looked sluggish from the middle rounds onward, but a late rally as instructed by Freddie Roach was key in snatching a victory for the Filipino featherweight. Two judges scored the fight 100-90 and 96-94 for Magsayo while the other had it 96-94 for Hermosillo.
Compubox numbers suggest a telling story too with Hermosillo landing 181 of 856 punches thrown while Magsayo struck 136 of 417 punches. The split decision win improved Magsayo’s record to 21-0 with 14 knockouts while Hermosillo dropped to 11-3-1 with 8 knockouts. — LA, GMA News
