Jeff Horn's cutman says he was tired after 2 rounds with Tszyu, encourages him to retire
Jeff Horn’s longtime cutman Stephen Edwards reveals that his ward was done after two rounds of fighting Tim Tszyu last Wednesday, August 26 at the Queensland Country Bank Stadium in Townsville, Australia.
Horn, most remembered by Filipino fight fans for his controversial win over Manny Pacquiao in 2017 where he claimed the WBO world welterweight title, was beaten from start to finish then made to quit on his stool before the start of round 9.
According to Edwards, Horn’s cutman for seven years, the former welterweight world champion simply had nothing left to offer just six minutes into the scheduled twelve-round bout.
“By the end of the second round I thought Jeff was gassed. He got by on pure heart from that point. Jeff had taken a lot of punishment. His legs were gone, his power was gone, his speed was gone and he had no petrol left,” Edwards told The Sunday Telegraph.
Horn’s corner waved the white flag upon seeing their fighter take a total beatdown at the hands of Tszyu, who previously worked as Pacquiao’s sparring partner in preparation for Keith Thurman. It was a decision that the Australian did not protest.
“Because I care so much about Jeff I couldn't allow him to go back out. Jeff's a warrior and if he'd had something left he'd have told us to let him go on,” said Edwards.
Horn stated shortly after the fight that he has some thinking to do after taking such punishment. And if it were up to Edwards, he would rather see his boxer hang up his gloves.
“People who care about Jeff a lot will be encouraging him to retire,” he quipped.
“This fight might be one of those occasions where father time just taps on you on the shoulder,” Edwards said. —KG, GMA News
