Roy Jones Jr. threatens to pull out from Mike Tyson fight
Former four-division world champion Roy Jones Jr. has threatened to withdraw from his much-anticipated fight against former world heavyweight champion Mike Tyson.
In an interview with the Daily Mail, the 51-year-old Jones cited his dissatisfaction with moving the date from September 12 to November 28.
The postponement was a move proposed by Tyson to maximize profits for the fight, but Jones sees it as nothing but a dent on his schedule.
“I’ve had to cancel other stuff to be out here, it upsets my calendar, and I’ve got to change things. That’s why we have to table bulls*** now. That’s the biggest issue. I’m not a full-time boxer anymore so I do other things to make an income,” said Jones.
“If I can’t do other things then I should be compensated for that, because it changes the schematics. It’s not acceptable.”
The eight-round exhibition between the two boxing legends is set to air on pay-per-view for a price tag of $49.99 on Triller app.
Jones initially had no qualms about the delay but has now changed his tune upon speaking with his legal team.
“We’re trying to figure something out,” he quipped.
“My lawyers are talking with their lawyers trying to figure out ways to make it a better situation so that I can be compensated for it that is more beneficial for me to do. Why would I change the date and mess up the rest of my year when I agreed to September 12.”
Jones last saw action inside the ring in February 2018 against Scott Sigmon where he won via unanimous decision.
He was done with the sport until he got a call to face Tyson, and now that he got lured back to fighting again, Jones wants to make sure that he is going to get handsomely paid for it.
“They said they wanted to get a crowd, if you want to get a crowd, that’s a different type of money. If you want a big event, that’s a different type of money,” he explained.
“You think I’m going to say, okay, let’s look at my money, but I’m not getting no better percent. How dumb is that to me? So let’s see what happens.” — LA, GMA News
