Roy Jones Jr. leaves door open for potential clash with MMA legend Anderson Silva
Four-division world champion Roy Jones Jr. is yet to overcome the litmus test that is Mike Tyson, yet he is already entertaining the thought of another fight with yet another legend.
Jones and Tyson are set to collide in a pay-per-view eight-round exhibition match on Sept. 12 in California.
Though the 51-year-old Jones stated in a recent interview that his next fight will be his last, he also left the door open for a potential showdown with the man touted by some as greatest of all time in MMA—retired UFC middleweight world champion Anderson Silva.
“People have been talking about Roy Jones Jr. versus Anderson Silva in a boxing match for years, even before the McGregor-Mayweather fight happened,” Jones told mmafighting.com.
“We were supposed to happen first. Unlike that fight, Anderson has professional boxing experience, McGregor didn’t.”
Indeed, a potential clash between Jones and Silva has been talked about for years though it never came to fruition.
Unlike Floyd Mayweather versus Conor McGregor, Jones believes that a potential showdown with Silva would be more competitive.
“This is much more of a competitive fight especially with us being older. Now, because he has experienced it is much easier for him to survive,” said Jones.
“He doesn’t have to deal with the young tiger Roy Jones. He gets to deal with the older Roy Jones where he may have a chance to deal with because I’m much older than what I once was.”
And while nothing is set on stone regarding Jones vs. Silva, one thing is for sure—it will be a big event where boxing and MMA fans would come together to watch.
“That still is a big event and it would’ve been a big event if it happened back then. As Mike shows you now, never say never, the opportunity may come now.” – JM Siasat/RC, GMA News
