Irish Magno drops quarterfinal bout, heads to box-offs for Olympic spot

Filipina boxers Irish Magno and Riza Pasuit both fell short of booking a slot to the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in the quarterfinals of the Asia and Oceania Olympic Qualifying Tournament on Monday in Amman, Jordan.

Magno lost to Indian six-time champ Mary Kom via unanimous decision in the quarterfinals of the women's flyweight division.

She will get another crack at an Olympic spot in the box-offs, along with Carlo Paalam in the men's flyweight.

Meanwhile, Riza Pasuit lost to Chinese Taipei's Shih-Yi Wu via unanimous decision in the women's lightweight division.

So far, Eumir Marcial was the only Filipino boxer to book a slot in the Olympics after advancing to the semifinals of the men's middleweight division.

Earlier, world boxing champ Nesthy Petecio also fell short on her bid for an Olympic ticket. She will get another chance to qualify for Tokyo in the World Olympic Qualifying Tournament in Paris in May. —BAP/MGP, GMA News
