Mikey Garcia is confident in getting Pacquiao fight

Manny Pacquiao is already 41 years old, but he's far from retiring from the sport.

As a boxer, the senator had a stellar 2019, beating Adrien Broner and Keith Thurman.

According to Chino Trinidad's Wednesday report on "24 Oras," three big names in the boxing world are already eager to battle it out in the ring with the eight-weight division world champion next year.

Among those who are hopeful for a match against Pacquiao are three Americans: his former sparring partner Shawn Porter, two-weight division world champion Danny Garcia, and four-weight division champion Mikey Garcia.

Mikey's brother and trainer Robert Garcia was the first to get in line for the Pacquiao sweepstakes in 2020.

"He'll be 41 in December but he still fights like a 30-year-old. He fought good. He's fast. He's strong. I think he's still the real deal, man. Anybody, including Mikey, it's not going to be easy," Garcia said of Pacquaio, who turned 41 on Tuesday.

With him being first to campaign for it, Garcia is optimistic that his camp is close to arranging a fight with the WBA welterweight champion.

"With Mikey's style, I'm not comparing him to [Juan Manuel] Marquez, but it's kind of a little counterpunching style and Marquez versus Pacquiao, we're always a close fight," Garcia said.

"So I think Mikey being young and strong, I think it brings the same kind of fight. It's gonna be a close fight and very difficult for both," he added.

Meanwhile, Pacquiao's former trainer and coach Freddie Roach said Mikey is a good prospect for the Filipino boxing superstar.

On Tuesday, Team Garcia announced Mikey will make his debut for a new fighting home next year.

Mikey, who turned 32 last Sunday, has signed with Matchroom Boxing USA and will fight exclusively and live on February 29. His opponent is yet to be announced. — Ma. Angelica Garcia/BM, GMA News
