NorthPort coach Bonnie Tan on win vs Barangay Ginebra: 'We're here to be competitive'
After five years, NorthPort has finally won against Barangay Ginebra.
The Batang Pier snapped its losing streak against Ginebra on Wednesday with a 119-116 victory in the PBA Commissioner's Cup.
For head coach Bonnie Tan, it was a statement game for his NorthPort crew.
"Tonight's game is a statement game for us. Everyone's questioning 'yung status ng team na 'di kami nananalo sa big teams. I hope na with this win, we proved na we're here to win games and we're here to be competitive. Hindi 'yung basta-basta na team lang," Tan said.
Joshua Munzon, who had 27 points in NorthPort's seventh win in eight games, said the team prepared for the Ginebra game during the holiday break.
"We've been preparing for this pretty much the whole break. I think all our hard work paid off tonight," he said.
However, the journey does not end yet for the Batang Pier.
"We just wanna focus on the next game, we won't look too far ahead," said Munzon.
Barangay Ginebra head coach Tim Cone, meanwhile, praised NorthPort.
"They played really well," Cone said.
"They are for real. We had problems stopping them. Munzon and Arvin are both playing in MVP level and their import's a great fit. Nothing we could've done to stop them tonight," Cone said, adding that they should have played better from the get-go.
Barangay Ginebra slipped to 5-3 in the team standings.
