UE pulls off upset, hands La Salle's first loss


John Abate and Wello Lingolingo put on a show on Sunday as the University of the East took down defending champions De La Salle University, 75-71, in UAAP Season 87 at the Mall of Asia Arena.

The Warriors relied on a strong start as it outscored La Salle in the first quarter, 28-11, before the Green Archers caught up and ended the first half within four, 42-38.

La Salle had a chance to win the game or at least force overtime late in the fourth period as they inched closer, 73-71, before Kevin Quiambao missed his freebies. Abate then sealed the victory with his free throws.

Abate had 20 points, five rebounds, an assist, and a steal, while Lingolingo had 18 points, three rebounds, one assist, and one steal as UE notched its second straight win and improved to 2-2.

Kevin Quiambao posted 17 points, nine boards, five assists, and a steal, while Mike Phillips had 16 points, nine rebounds, five steals, two blocks, and an assist as the Green Archers slipped to 3-1.

Earlier, the University of the Philippines dominated Far Eastern University, 69-58.

Quentin Millora-Brown registered a double-double of 11 points and 13 rebounds, and one assist, while Francis Lopez had 13 points and four rebounds as the Fighting Maroons extended its winning streak to four.

Adam Nakai, Jorick Bautista, and Veejay Pre had 12, 11, and 10 points, respectively as FEU remained winless in four games.
