Gilas Pilipinas Women fall to Senegal, cap run in FIBA World Cup Pre-qualifiers


The Gilas Pilipinas Women capped their run in the FIBA Women's World Cup Pre-Qualifying Tournament on Thursday (Philippine time) as it fell to Senegal, 87-62, in Rwanda.

The Philippines and Senegal were neck-and-neck in the first quarter as the latter finished with a slim 22-20 lead. However, Senegal picked up in the second period and closed the first half at 45-32, before cruising onto the victory.

Jack Animam led the gallant stand with 15 points while Naomi Panganiban added 14 markers.

Ndioma Kane posted 21 points for Senegal, while Fatou Pouye and Khadidiatou Sarr had 13 and 12 points, respectively.

Gilas went winless in its campaign as it also lost to Brazil, 77-74, and Hungary, 97-60. 

Only the top two teams of each group will advance to the semis. Gilas finished at the bottom of Group C, while Senegal and Hungary clinched the top two spots and advanced to the next round. Brazil placed third with 1-2.
