Tim Cone says no agreement yet with SBP on Gilas coaching job

Gilas Pilipinas head coach Tim Cone

Barangay Ginebra head coach Tim Cone, who steered the country back to the Asian Games gold medal, said he has yet to reach an agreement with the Samahang Basketbol ng Pillipinas (SBP) regarding the permanent Gilas Pilipinas coaching job.

Cone, though, revealed that he had a talk with the federation last week, but begged off from disclosing the topics discussed and stressed nothing has been set in stone at the moment.

"There’s nothing to ask me about GIlas, there’s nothing going on. We’ve had some conversations but there’s nothing that’s been done so far. I think everybody’s jumped the gun on this and I think that’s up to the SBP," said Cone on the heels of the Gin Kings' 106-93 quarterfinals win against NorthPort.

"And I think they are still up in the air about it. I have had some conversations but there’s been nothing definite and I think you have to wait for there announcement and how they want to do about it."

Gilas Pilipinas is expected to name the coach who will handle Gilas in the long run with the nearest tournament already slated next month for the 2025 FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers.

The Philippines will take on Hong Kong on the road on February 22 before hosting Chinese Taipei on February 25 at the PhilSports Arena.

Cone said even with the tournament looming in, he has yet to hear from the federation on whether he will call the shots for the national anew.

"I know that they are kind of in a hurry because it is already the February window in a few weeks and I guess they still need to assemble the team and do all kinds of things," he said.

"But you know, it’s not on me to announce anything or say anything. It’s really on SBP."
