Kai Ballungay leaves Ateneo to turn pro

UAAP Kai Ballungay Ateneo Blue Eagles

Kai Ballungay has decided to leave the Blue Eagles' nest as the Filipino-American forward bid Ateneo de Manila University goodbye after two seasons in the UAAP.

The high-flying forward bared the shocking announcement in a heartfelt post on Instagram on Monday, sharing he is now setting his sights on playing hoops professionally.

“As I sit here to write this letter, a profound sense of gratitude and appreciation have accompanied my thoughts as I realize that my time with the Blue Eagles has come to an end,” Ballungay said in a lengthy message.

“I want to start by saying that I am so very blessed to have shared so many memories with you all in the two seasons I've been able to represent the blue and white."

Ballungay played a crucial role for the Blue Eagles, helping the squad reclaim the title back in Season 85 after they earned a payback against University of the Philippines.

They then reached the Final Four in Season 86 but they could not replicate the feat as they fell to the twice-to-beat Fighting Maroons in the semifinals. But when Ateneo looks to redeem itself anew next season, Ballungay won't be around anymore.

Ballungay has nothing but gratitude to the whole Ateneo community and his teammates and coaches for giving him the opportunity to play for the school.

"Thank you Coach Tab for everything. There are not enough words I can express in this letter to fully describe how thankful I am for you and for the time you have given me during my stay in Ateneo," he added.

"To my brothers, I truly am nothing without you, The bonds we have formed over the past two years go far beyond the confines of the basketball court."

Ballungay didn't exactly say his next moves but shared he is ready to jump to the professional scene.

“With strong feelings of excitement, I wish to share that I will be embarking on the next chapter of my journey — transitioning to the world of professional basketball."
