La Salle escapes UP behind Quiambao, Phillips double-doubles

De La Salle University survived University of the Philippines' late rally, 88-79, to retain its hold of the third spot in the UAAP Season 86 on Sunday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

After trailing 66-59, the Fighting Maroons claimed the lead, 75-74, with 4:45 remaining in the fourth period. Kevin Quiambao then scored the Green Archers' next ten points to give La Salle an 84-77 lead with 1:49 remaining.

Cansino then drilled a long two but Evan Nelle answered with a dagger trey to seal La Salle's victory. 

Quiambao and Mike Phillips both registered double-double performances to lead the Taft-based squad to its seventh win in ten games.

Quiambao posted 22 points and 12 rebounds, on top of three steals and two assists. Mike on the other hand had 15 points and 12 boards. Nelle had 17 points, six assists, four boards, and one steal.

Cansino, meanwhile, had 20 points as the Fighting Maroons were dealt their second loss.

Earlier, University of the East survived Far Eastern University in overtime, 87-86.

Noy Remogat dropped 34 points as the Red Warriors improved to 4-6, while FEU went down to 3-7.

UAAP action will return on Wednesday at the Smart Araneta Coliseum with La Salle versus Adamson University as the main matchup at 6 p.m.
