FEU survives Ateneo in OT for first win; UP stays perfect with rout of UST
Far Eastern University and the University of the Philippines notched wins on Saturday in UAAP Season 86 at the Mall of Asia Arena.
FEU took down defending champion Ateneo de Manila University, 66-61, in overtime to claim its first win in five games this season.
LJ Gonzales took over in the extra period as he scored four of the Tamaraws' nine points en route to their first win against the Blue Eagles since October 2018.
Gonzales paced the Morayta-based squad with 21 points, seven rebounds, two assists, and one steal, while Xyrus Torres chipped in 13 points.
Jared Brown had 18 points while Kai Ballungay had 12 points as the Katipunan-based squad dropped to 2-3.
Meanwhile, the University of the Philippines dismantled the still winless University of Santo Tomas, 110-79, for their fifth straight win.
After ending the first half with a 59-45 lead, the Fighting Maroons pulled away and outscored the Growling Tigers, 35-14 in the third period to end the said frame at 94-62. This was enough to give UP control of the game until the final buzzer.
Harold Alarcon had 21 points, while JD Cagulangan had 16 points and nine rebounds for the Diliman-based squad.
Nic Cabañero and Christian Manaytay carried the España crew with 24 and 23 points, respectively.
UAAP action will return on Sunday with National University taking on De La Salle University and Adamson University facing University of the East in the afternoon in the same venue.
