Gilas Pilipinas revamps lineup with less than a week left before Asian Games
By BEA MICALLER, GMA Integrated News
Gilas Pilipinas revamped its lineup with only a few days left before it plunges into the 19th Asian Games on September 26 in Hangzhou, China.
The nationals have called up Kevin Alas, Chris Ross, Arvin Tolentino, CJ Perez, and Marcio Lassiter as replacements for Calvin Abueva, Terrence Romeo, Mo Tautuaa, and Jason Perkins, who were all ruled out to join the Asiad campaign due to eligibility issues.
Gilas Pilipinas head coach Tim Cone said that aside from the initial list of 60 players submitted months ago to the Asian Games Organizing Committee, a new 37-man pool has been submitted recently.
"There's another list that was submitted and it's a list of 37 players and on that list, Mo and Terrence and even Stanley (Pringle) were not on that new list that was submitted," Cone said in a press conference at the PBA Office on Tuesday afternoon.
"So we had a 60 list that we originally worked on, with the two guys, Calvin and Jason, not on that list. Now all four players were not on the new list."
Still, Gilas Pilipinas and the Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) have not lost hope on the possibility of fielding Abueva and the three initial players submitted.
"From what I understand, we are still finding avenues in which we can get them in. The words we got are they would probably won't be available but we're still looking for avenues," Cone added.
Gilas Pilipinas will open its campaign on September 26 against Bahrain.
