Dennis Schroder in disbelief as 'long ride' with Germany finally leads to FIBA World Cup gold

Dennis Schroder has been with the Germany national team since he was 18, suiting up for his country from the age-group youth competitions, including the 2012 FIBA Europe Under-20 Championship, before making his way to the NBA.

Now 29, Schroder has played for several NBA teams, like the Atlanta Hawks, Oklahoma City Thunder, Los Angeles Lakers, Houston Rockets, Boston Celtics, and next season, the Toronto Raptors.

Through all that, he has made himself available for the German team as well.

And on late Sunday night, Schroder finally got what he had been longing for during that long ride: a FIBA World Cup title.

"First of all, it's been a long ride. I've been here for over ten years I think and to be here now, going 8-0 is unbelievable," Schroder said in the post-game press conference following their 83-77 gold medal win against Serbia.

"It's an unbelievable group. Everybody just brings the best to be this successful. I think to be 8-0 in a group where we had big teams and then go into the next stage and play Slovenia and Georgia and then go to the KO stage, is just unbelievable."

In their quarterfinals showdown against Latvia, Schroder struggled to deliver, only finishing with nine points and four assists. But since then, Schroder has just been unstoppable.

He dropped 17 points and nine assists in the semifinals against the USA while he churned out 28 markers, two boards, and two dimes to bring Germany to the top of world basketball.

For the tournament, the team captain of Germany posted averages of 19.1 points, 6.1 assists, and 2 rebounds per game en route to being named the MVP of the tournament.

But for Schroder, it's all about the gold medal.

"Winning the gold medal is just a blessing," he said.
