USA coach Steve Kerr on OT loss to Canada: 'We just ran out of gas'

For the second straight edition, powerhouse Team USA finished outside of the podium of the FIBA World Cup as the squad fell to Canada in their bronze medal game on Sunday at the Mall of Asia Arena.

The USA's hopes for the medal were renewed after Mikal Bridges played the hero in regulation, intentionally missing his second free throw before he found the leather and knocked down a game-tying corner triple that would send the game into overtime.

They, however, fired blanks in the extra period with only Austin Reaves connecting from the field as Canada completed the upset.

USA head coach Steve Kerr said they simply ran out of steam in the final minutes, resulting in a 127-118 win for Canada, the third time in their last four games where they allowed their opponents to score more than 100 points.

They fell to Germany in the semifinals in a tight 113-111 loss. Before that, they also absorbed a 110-104 defeat to Lithuania in the final second group match.

"I feel bad for our guys. They really put so much into this over the last six weeks," Kerr said in the post-game interview.

"It's tough to try to hang in there without three guys who are very important to the team but these guys, they fought and did everything possible to hang in. Mikal hit an incredible shot to force overtime, but we just ran out of gas."

Anthony Edwards was among the bright spots for USA as the Minnesota Timberwolves standout dropped 24 points, five rebounds, three assists, one steal, and one block in the losing effort.

Canada, meanwhile, rode a huge game from Dillon Brooks who registered 39 points on top of four rebounds, five assists, and two blocks.

And despite seeing his team go home empty-handed, Kerr was gracious enough to say their opponents proved deserving of the win.

"Canada deserved it and congrats," he said.
