Chot Reyes to 'step aside' as Gilas Pilipinas head coach

Chot Reyes may have coached his final game as the veteran tactician is 'stepping aside' as Gilas Pilipinas mentor, announcing the huge development in their final game in the 2023 FIBA World Cup on Saturday.

Gilas won over China, 96-75, in the classification round to cap their World Cup campaign.

Reyes said he first bared the news to Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas (SBP) president Al Panlilio before their match against China at the Smart Araneta Coliseum.

"Through all the preparations and through all these times, I always said that 'judge us in the World Cup', regardless of what happened from the time I was appointed to today," Reyes said in the post-game conference.

"And obviously we didn't perform and like I said in the last game, I take full accountability. And because of that I think it's time for me to step aside," he added.

Reyes re-joined the national team in January 2022 after Tab Baldwin stepped down to focus on the Ateneo de Manila Blue Eagles.
