USA's Steve Kerr on coaching with Spoelstra, Lue, Few: 'These guys are amazing'
What does it feel to coach with some of the top coaches of one's country?
Team USA head coach Steve Kerr is living with that experience in the 2023 FIBA World Cup as he has Erik Spoelstra of the Miami Heat, Ty Lue of the Los Angeles Clippers, and Mark Few of Gonzaga University in the US NCAA Division I in his coaching staff.
Spoelstra, a Filipino-American, is a two-time NBA champion coach, while Lue steered the Cleveland Cavaliers to the NBA title back in 2016. Few, meanwhile, is a two-time Naismith College Coach of the Year Awardee.
Kerr's resume, of course, includes being a four-time champion coach for the Golden State Warriors.
"These guys are amazing," Kerr said on Saturday after their 99-72 win against New Zealand.
"To coach with Mark Few, Spo, and Ty, all three of them immediately said yes when I called them to ask them to be on the staff."
"It's pretty amazing for me to lean on them to run a drill or to talk to the team or to decide on a scheme or suggest a play," he added.
For Kerr, being with world-class coaches is also part of his learning experience as a coach.
"Part of the experience for me as a coach is not only to coach these young great players like Austin [Reaves] and his teammates but also to coach with these staff and we all have a lot of fun together so it's a great vibe."
