Jordan Clarkson-less Gilas falls to Mexico in last tuneup before FIBA World Cup
Gilas Pilipinas could not get the job done in the endgame as it fell to Mexico, 84-77, to wrap up a three-game series of tuneups in preparation for the 2023 FIBA World Cup on Monday night at the PhilSports Arena.
The Filipinos closed out the friendlies with one win and two losses as Jordan Clarkson sat out the game.
Also missing the game were Thirdy Ravena and Ray Parks, who were not fielded for a third straight time.
Gilas held the lead, 61-59, late in the third quarter before three triples from Mexico's Paul Stoll bridging the third and fourth periods allowed the guests to take a 72-63 advantage.
But the Philippines regained some momentum with Dwight Ramos drilling a triple of his own to cut the deficit to five, 77-72.
Pako Cruz's triple at the 1:38 mark gave Mexico a 10-point advantage, 84-74, that eventually proved enough for the victory.
Cruz had 18 points to lead three other Mexicans who reached double digits scoring.
Scottie Thompson, meanwhile, led Gilas with 14 points alongside six rebounds and five assists while Ramos finished with nine markers, three boards, three dimes, two blocks, and one steal in 24 minutes of action.
Kai Sotto finished with eight points but went scoreless in the second half.
Next up for Gilas is their FIBA World Cup opener on Friday against Dominican Republic at the Philippine Arena.
