Victor Wembanyama drafted No. 1 overall by Spurs in 2023 NBA Draft
Victor Wembanyama was drafted No. 1 overall by the San Antonio Spurs in the 2023 NBA Draft on Thursday (Friday in Manila) at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn, New York.
The 7-foot-4 French center was expected to be the first pick as he was considered one of the most exciting draft prospects in a long time. The 19-year-old led his Metropolitans 92 team to the finals of France's LNB Pro A Season and was named the Season MVP. He averaged 21.6 points, 10.4 rebounds, and 3.0 blocks per game.
The Spurs finished with a 22-60 record last season.
The Charlotte Hornets selected Brandon Miller at No. 2 while the Portland Trail Blazers picked G League Ignite's Scoot Henderson at the third pick.
Twins Amen and Ausar Thompson went 4 and 5 to the Houston Rockets and the Detroit Pistons, respectively. Anthony Black was the No. 6 pick, heading to the Orlando Magic.
Another French prospect, Wembanyama's teammate Bilal Coulibaly, was the seventh pick, selected by the Indiana Pacers but will be traded to the Washington Wizards.
The Pacers and Wizards swapped the seventh and eighth picks, with Indiana receiving draft prospect Jarace Walker from Washington as well as some second round picks.
