PNP starts security preps for FIBA World Cup 2023
The Philippine National Police (PNP) on Thursday said it has started its preparations for the security of the International Basketball Federation (FIBA) Basketball World Cup 2023 on August 25 to September 10.
In a statement, the PNP said a task force has been created to ensure the security of the 19th edition of FIBA World Cup which will be hosted by the Philippines.
“The Security Task Force (STF) FBWC 2023 has been organized as the primary body responsible for conducting security operations and other related public safety services during the basketball event.” it said.
According to the PNP, the STF is headed by the PNP’s acting deputy chief for operations.
It will coordinate with various organizations, including the Philippine Sports Commission, local organizing committee, Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas, local governments, stakeholders, and other concerned agencies.
PNP chief Police General Benjamin Acorda Jr. said they will use the same framework utilized for the 2015 APEC Summit, 2015 Papal Visit, 2017 ASEAN Summit and the 2020 Miss Universe Pageant.
"The PNP is fully committed to the success of this prestigious international event. We are working closely with our partner agencies to deliver a memorable experience for everyone involved,” Acorda said.
FIBA 2023 will be hosted in three nations in Asia: the Philippines, Japan, and Indonesia.
The Philippines will specifically host participants from Africa, Americas, Asia-Pacific, and Europe with an expected total of 3,253 FIBA customer groups participating, the PNP said.
To kick off the tournament, the opening ceremony and opening games between Angola vs Italy and Philippines vs Dominican Republic will be held at the Philippine Arena in Sta Maria, Bulacan, according to the PNP.
PNP public information office chief Police Brigadier General Redrico Maranan called on the public “to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activities to ensure a safe and enjoyable event for all”.
The PNP said it is eyeing for “zero incidents” during the event. —Joviland Rita/ VAL, GMA Integrated News
