Devin Haney decisions Lomachenko to retain undisputed lightweight title
Devin Haney retained his WBC, WBA, WBO, and IBF world lightweight title following a close unanimous decision nod over Vasiliy Lomachenko this Sunday (Manila time) at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada.
Haney was on the attack early while Lomachenko studied to close the distance with his jabs and swift footwork. The bout turned out to be a chess match as early as round two, with both fighters exchanging attacks and having moments of their own
Haney landed big uppercuts to the body in round 5. Lomachenko tried to press the action and landed punches of his own, but was mostly kept at bay by his opponent's crisp jabs. Lomachenko bit back by a couple of clean left straights at the start of round 7 that caught Haney's attention.
Lomachenko stunned Haney with a flurry in round 10, his best round yet of the fight. He doubled down on the attack the following round, catching Haney with a flurry that landed clean on a fading Haney.
Lomachenko fought with urgency in the final round while Haney seemed content fighting backward hiding behind his jab. All three judges saw the fight for Haney after twelve rounds, improving his record 30-0 with 15 knockouts while Lomachenko fell 17-3 with 11 knockouts.
The scorecards were 116-112, 115-113, and 115-113.
