NBA names MVP trophy after Michael Jordan, unveils reimagined trophies for individual awards

The NBA on Tuesday unveiled its reimagined trophies for individual awards, including the Most Valuable Player trophy, which was named after basketball legend Michael Jordan.

According to the NBA, the new trophy collection is a tribute to players who have helped shape the league.

“Our new collection of trophies celebrates some of the greatest and most impactful players in the history of the NBA,” NBA commissioner Adam Silver said in a statement.  “As we recognize the league’s top performers each season, we also pay tribute to the legends who embody these prestigious awards.”

The Michael Jordan Trophy, which will be awarded to the league MVP, is a "symbol of an NBA player's journey to winning an MVP."

It is a bronze trophy which features a player breaking out of a rock to reach a crystal basketball, which was described as the ultimate rock.

The said trophy stands at 23.6 inches tall and weighs 23.6 pounds -- a representation of Jordan's jersey number and championships. It stands on a five-sided base, which symbolizes his five league MVPs. The namesake badge is six-sided which also represents Jordan's NBA championships.

The base of the trophy is at 15-degrees which represents Jordan's 15-season career, while the crystal basketball has 23 points, a nod to Jordan's jersey number. The basketball measures 1.23 inches in diameter which represents the singularity of Jordan's career.

Other reimagined trophies include:

Jerry West Trophy (NBA Clutch Player of the Year)
Hakeem Olajuwon Trophy (NBA Defensive Player of the Year)
Wilt Chamberlain Trophy (NBA Rookie of the Year)
John Havlicek Trophy (NBA Sixth Man of the Year)
George Mikan Trophy (NBA Most Improved Player)

According to an ESPN report, Denver Nuggets' Nikola Jokic will retroactively receive the first Michael Jordan Trophy after being named MVP last season.
