Jolo Manansala double-double tows NU past Ateneo; FEU notches fourth straight at La Salle's expense

National University survived the comeback attempt of Ateneo de Manila University, 78-74, to take their first win against the Katipunan-based squad in six years on Wednesday in UAAP Season 85 at the Mall of Asia Arena.

Down 29-41 at the end of the first half, Ateneo claimed the lead in the third period after limiting the Bulldogs to just 15 points against their 28-point explosion to end the frame, 57-56.

Jolo Manansala proved to be crucial in NU's fourth quarter run as the Sampaloc-based squad led by as much as five, 70-65, midway into the quarter. Ateneo eventually tied the game at 72 with 46.7 ticks left, but Manansala made a shot from Patrick Yu with 38.3 seconds to retake the lead.

A foul on Kean Baclaan put him on the line where he split his free throws. Malonzo also split his free throws before an Ange Kouame put Ateneo to within two, 76-74.

An Ildefonso foul on Yu put him on the line where he sank both his free throws which gave NU the win.

Manansala registered a double-double with 17 points, 11 rebounds, 3 assists, two steals, and two blocks in NU's first win since September 2016.

Earlier, Far Eastern University extended its winning streak to four after defeating De La Salle University, 57-53.

Xyrus Torres and LJ Gonzales chipped in 12 and 10 points each, while Kevin Quiambao tallied 12 points for a depleted La Salle squad who played without key players such as Schonny Winston, Mike Phillips, and Evan Nelle.

The University of the Philippines dominated Adamson University, 91-70, while the University of the East annihilated University of Santo Tomas, 81-51.

UAAP action will be back on Saturday with another quadruple-header which will be capped with rivals Ateneo and La Salle going against each other at 6:30 p.m.
